About The NAPS Credential

Volume 3, Number 5                                                                                                                              November 2008

The economic downturn-turned-recession clearly represents a major source of anxiety for most Americans and has them behaving differently according to a poll by USA Today and the Gallup Organization. Will the federal bailout work? How will my standard of living and career situation be influenced by the current economy? Can I afford to retire? These are just a few of the questions that Americans are asking, ones that are causing many to pause and consider options and behaviors.

In findings updated on September 30, 2008, one third (33%) of surveyed adults said the economy had already reached "depression" proportions and nearly three quarters (73%) expect things to get worse before they improve. The poll examined spending habits, job security and other personal and family issues. Access the entire story at: http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/2008-09-28-poll-depression_N.htm

CERS Credentials Earned at Training Session in Orlando
by Jeff Skrentny, CERS, NAPS Credentialing Chair

NAPS would like to congratulate the most recent eight search/recruiting professionals who successfully participated in the October 14-15, 2008, two-day NAPS Certified Employment Retention Specialist (CERS) program at the NAPS Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida. Margaret Graziano of KeenHire served as the CERS trainer and facilitator. Those earning the credential included:

Brian Courtney, CERS, Courtney Group Inc., Las Vegas, NV
Glynda Finister, CERS, Advantage Human Capital Inc., Beavercreek, OH
Deborah Harper, CERS, Harper Hewes Executive Search, Pittsford, NY
Ed Keil, CERS, Plastic Executive Recruiters, Advance, NC
Kathryn Sheperd, CERS, Focus Agency, Simi Valley, CA
Diane Skullr, CERS, OZ Medical Search Services, Gold Canyon, AZ
Aaron Wandtke, CERS, Executive Staffing Solutions, Worthington, OH
Jeff Wilson, CERS, Key Corporation Services, Fishers, IN

These new certificants join 28 other individuals to form an elite group of 36 professionals in North America (see list below) to have earned the CERS credential. This corps of search/recruiting professionals understands their clients are looking for consultants who can give them expertise and serious consultative advice beyond that involved in the interview and hiring process. CERS consultants are advancing the concept of providing assistance after placement and throughout the employee development relationship.

The CERS credential isn’t for everyone. It requires a significant time and capital investment, and it is not an easy credential to earn or keep. CERS candidates must have already earned their CPC or CTS designation, the credential that educates one regarding the laws that pertain to the profession. NAPS believes those earning the CERS designation will be able to provide a unique and extended service, one that separates them from their competitors and offers an alternative business dimension and revenue stream.

Should you be interested in joining the ranks of future Certified Employment Retention Specialists and expanding your work consistent with the direction described above, contact NAPS headquarters (706-531-0060) to find out the dates and locations of future two-day CERS training programs. Then do the hard work necessary to join this elite group of CERS credentialed NAPS search/recruiting professionals.

Fast Fact - Your Candidates May Be Going Back to School

Many of candidates for the positions you are advertising may be watching the current economic situation from the sidelines---that is if you consider going back to school the sidelines. According to the Graduate Management Admission Council, more than 185,000 candidates for graduate school have taken their GMAT exam to this point in 2008, up 37,000 in just three years. The obvious result is a corresponding rise in the number of applications to MBA and other educational programs.

Differentiate & Elevate ~ The Case for Improved Employee Retention
by Margaret Graziano

With a rocky economy, emerging industries on the rise, three generations in the workforce, senior level leaders on the verge of retirement and a sea of recruiting alternatives knocking at our clients’ doors, it is time to start thinking about how we as an industry are going to align ourselves as strategic business partners rather than as transactional service providers.

The Society of Human Resource Management reports that six of the top ten workplace trends are directly related to talent acquisition, selection and retention. The number one trend to most likely have a major impact on the workplace is workforce retention, and the most critical HR function effecting business strategy is staffing/ employment and recruiting.

William Blair, an investment firm specializing in the HR technologies market reports that corporations are buying performance management programs, succession planning and retention systems and hiring systems that leverage their ability to hire, retain and grow the right people. Those issues are not separate---they are looked at as “talent management” and there is no other group of people on the planet better equipped to empower corporations to solve these problems than people like us, top-tier search professionals who work on the front lines of talent acquisition, all day, every day.

Some ways you can differentiate immediately is to ask some strategic talent mindset questions when you are prospecting for new clients as well as attempting to reposition yourself with existing ones. Ask about their retention programs, ask what their employee engagement model looks like, and ask them when they benchmarked their best performers what they learned. What you will learn by asking these types of questions is if they have a talent mindset. If they do, you will need to up your game to be their partner. If they don’t, you might not want their business.

Advocacy Matters ~ Does Your Web Site Tell Visitors You’re Certified?

How well does your web site tell prospective candidates and clients that you have earned NAPS certification and that you perform you role as a staffing professional in accordance with the NAPS Standards of Ethical Practice and certification program rules? Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to promote your CPC, CTS or CERS credential and tell your publics about your achievements.

Conference Clipping ~ NAPS Conference, Las Vegas, NV, October 1-3, 2009

Las Vegas has been pushing the theme---“What happens in Las Vegas---Stays in Las Vegas” as a part of it’s tourism program, telling visitors to come, let their hair down, have a good time and then return home. NAPS is holding it’s 2009 national conference at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas on October 1-3 and taking a different view.

NAPS believes that what you learn in Las Vegas should not stay in Las Vegas. Take it home to your candidates and clients and infuse this new knowledge into your daily practice. Further, share each learning and networking experience the NAPS conference affords you with your staffing colleagues, resulting in extended benefit to your firm and business. Mark October 1-3, 2009 on your calendar now and watch www.recruitinglife.com later in the year when the association begins a series of informational announcements about speakers, programs and special events.

Relevant Research ~ Higher Education Attainment Gains for Americans Have Stalled, Especially for People of Color

According to a new report from the American Council on Education (ACE), the gains in college degree attainment made by young adults in the United States over the past half century have stalled, and for many people of color, the percentage earning degrees has receded. The Minorities in Higher Education 2008 Twenty-third Status Report also reports that high school diploma attainment among racial groups is widening.

With respect to high school completion, the report states the rate for African Americans remained "relatively flat" (at about 76 percent) over the past two decades. Hispanics, even with some improvement, continued to have the lowest rate (68 percent) among all racial and ethnic groups, while Asian Americans had the highest rate (about 91 percent).

Frequently Asked Questions ~ Answers to Your Questions and a Few You May Not Have Thought Of

Each edition of The NAPS Credential will answer one or two questions being asked by current and prospective CPCs, CTSs and CERSs as they interface with the NAPS national office.

Question: I find that I’m not doing a very good job of keeping track of my continuing education experiences and fear that I won’t have the proper amount when NAPS asks for my records? Any thoughts on how I might do a better job?

Answer: If you go to http://www.recruitinglife.com/download/ceulog.pdf, you will find the NAPS continuing education log in pdf form that you can download. Keep this long your desk or planner or give it to a support staff member who can help you monitor your continuing education progress. On that log, list all in-house training programs, conferences, seminars and the myriad other continuing education activities NAPS will allow you to experience and receive credit. If you have a question about whether something will count or how much time it is worth, send an email to describing the activity and time you spent involved to Dr. Frank Burtnett at fburtnett@recruitinglife.com and he will provide the answer.
