About The NAPS Credential

Volume 2, Number 6                                                                                                                              June 2007

In the Maine Jobs section of the Portland Press Herald on Sunday, June 17, the weekly "Job Spotlight" provided information for readers on a recruiting and diversity manager. Not just any recruiting and diversity manager--mind you--but Cindy Lebel, CPC, of Time Warner Cable of Maine/New Hampshire. In an interview format, Ms. Lebel indicated she held the CPC designation as a part of the Q&A describing her work, typical day and the essential skills she brings to her work. She went on to stress her continued study and the importance of continuing education in the life of a staffing professional.

Opportunities come along from time to time that CPCs and CTSs should use to help their clients and the public better understand the meaning of NAPS certification and the importance of dealing with staffing professionals who are committed to professional and ethical standards and have achieved the NAPS credential.

Congratulations to Cindy Lebel, CPC for speaking out about the her status as a Certified Personnel Consultant. Readers are encouraged to tell The NAPS Credential of ways you have been able to call client and public attention to your credential. Advocacy matters!

Education to Work - Most Popular College Majors

Having a hard time filling specific positions in your search or staffing firm? Finding too few entry level people for some jobs? Maybe the things that college students are studying and the real world or work are not on the same page. The following information from the National Center for Education Statistics of the US Department of Education reveals some interesting data.

Of the 1,400,000 bachelor's degrees conferred in 2003-04, the largest numbers of degrees were awarded in the fields of business (307,000), social sciences and history (150,000), and education (106,000). At the master's degree level, the largest fields were education (162,000) and business (139,000). The largest fields at the doctor's degree level were education (7,100), engineering (5,900), biological and biomedical sciences (5,200), psychology (4,800), and health professions and related clinical sciences (4,400).

Frequently Asked Questions - Registry Posting and State Meetings for CEU Credit

Each edition of The NAPS Credential will answer one or two questions being asked by current and prospective CPCs and CTSs as they interface with the NAPS national office.

Question: Why doesn't my listing appear on the National Registry of Certified Staffing Industry Professionals after I post the information?

Answer: You must allow several days for NAPS to validate your posting. Since participation in the NRCSIP is voluntary, NAPS must make certain that you earned the CPC or CTS certificate and your certification is valid. Go to www.nrcsip.com and post your information and the return a few days later to check. Also remember to tell the clients you serve about your CPC or CTS and encourage them to go to www.nrcsip.com to learn more about the meaning of NAPS certification.

Question: I attended a state association meeting this spring and wanted to know if I could applying that experience toward my NAPS certification maintenance. What do I need to do?

Answer: This is a frequent question and the answer bears repeating. A number of years ago, NAPS gave "blanket" approval to its network of state association meetings for certification maintenance. All you need to do is calculate the number of contact hours (time in presentations, sessions, etc.) and record it on your CEU (continuing education unit) log. If you do not have a log, go to: http://www.recruitinglife.com//download/ceulog.pdf and download a personal copy. Remember that one hour of training contact time translates to one tenth of a CEU. A typical one day conference programs has a CEU worth of .7 CEUs for a seven hour program. Record your continuing education experiences regularly and you will not find yourself scurrying at the end of the three year period to complete your log.

Direct any questions about CEU calculation to Frank Burtnett at fburtnett@recruitinglife.com.
