About The NAPS Credential

Volume 4, Number 4                                                                                                                               July/August 2009

By Frank Burtnett, Ed.D.

Are you a staffing professional wondering what value holding a Certified Personnel Consultant (CPC), Certified Temporary Staffing-Specialist (CTS), Physician Recruiting Consultant (PRC) or Certified Employee Retention Specialist (CERS) might mean to your status in the industry? Are you an active NAPS certificant wondering if the credential you earned was worth the energy, time and cost you had to expend to achieve it? As an educational consultant, I have had the opportunity to work with a number of different certification and credentialing programs and examine their importance in the U.S. workplace.

Certification has a positive effect on the professional

Call it your professional demeanor or that “swagger” that you develop and then overtly express, but certified individuals are known to have a confidence in their knowledge and skills, one that affects the way they go about their daily work. That confidence is often translated into improved performance and productivity and is seen as a deterrent to “burn out.” In some fields like engineering and nursing, certified professionals have been cited being more satisfied with their work, a factor that leads to improved retention. The certificate on the wall is a visual symbol of one’s commitment to professionalism.

Certification is a measure of professionalism and ethics

Linked to their certification achievements is an implied understanding that those awarded NAPS certification will practice their profession in accordance with certification program rules and industry generated ethical standards. Since 1995, NAPS has promoted continuing education as a program rule and asked all certificants to “refresh” their personal and professional skills at regular intervals. Further, all NAPS certificants must abide by the ethical conduct developed by their professional peers and advanced by the association. Compliance with these rules and adherence with the standards become another measure of professionalism.

Certification is a consumer statement by the staffing firm

A staffing firm that promotes certification is telling candidates and clients that it set the bar just a little higher than its competition. The presence of certified individuals in a staffing firm is an indication that ownership supports NAPS professional and ethical standards. The firm’s certified staff members have studied the relationship of the law to employment and are positioned to function within those legal boundaries. Certification becomes an objective, measurable distinction when “due diligence” tests are applied by the consumer.

Certification represents a public education opportunity

Ever have anyone ask you what those letters behind your name mean? The inquirer is giving you an opportunity to educate them about the staffing industry’s oldest and most respected professional certification program. For nearly a half century, the National Association of Personnel Services has emphasized the importance of staffing professionals working in accordance with the laws of the land in providing services to candidates and clients. NAPS has built an industry training and certification program around that knowledge. By educating the public, you are telling then what they are getting when they work with a certified staffing professional.

In summary, certification matters to you, to your firm or and to your candidates and clients. Don’t wonder if you should become certified? Don’t wonder if getting certified was worth achieving. If you want to wonder about something, wonder if have lost candidates or clients to your peers who have those certification letters behind their name.

Community Colleges to Play Larger Role in Employment and Training

Citing the importance of aligning education and jobs as a vital part of the revitalization of the U.S. economy, the Obama administration has called for new and expanded initiatives at the nation’s community colleges and greater access for students seeking training or retraining. Speaking in July at Macomb Community College in Michigan---a state hit hard by the current recession---the President outlined a 10 year plan that would increase postsecondary education graduation rates and more effectively prepare students for the contemporary workforce. Details of the plan are presented at the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) website.

Worth Reading: Some Health Care Salaries are Resisting Recession

A report in the online edition of Forbes.com in July references a PayScale study pointing to the salaries that are increasing or holding their own during these recessionary times. Health care careers---with pharmacists in particular---appear to be the most resilient. The article points to the rising numbers of baby boomers needing health care and the fact that people do not get less sick during a depression as contributing factors. Some engineering salaries are also doing well.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) ~ Lapsed Certification Reinstatement

Each edition of The NAPS Credential will answer one or two questions being asked by current and prospective CPCs, CTSs and CERSs as they interface with the NAPS national office.

Question: I have inadvertently allowed my certification to expire---even as I have been actively pursuing continuing education experiences and maintaining my log. What can I do to become reinstated?

Answer: You have experienced what a number of your professional peers have experienced and NAPS will work with you to get everything caught up. After the initial steps you have taken to become certified, we know you take your credential seriously and we prefer to keep you among the ranks of the certified. Contact Frank Burtnett at fburtnett@recruitinglife.com and explain your personal circumstances and he will guide you personally through the recertification process.
