About The NAPS Credential

Volume 2, Number 7                                                                                                                              July 2007

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the US Department of Labor regularly identifies the professions expected to experience above-average growth over the next decade. Most of these positions fall within the top quarter of earnings for workers overall, and most require a bachelor's degree or higher. Can staffing professionals expect a corresponding growth in job orders in these occupations?

Recent BLS reports identified the following eight occupations with the largest projected growth (number in parenthesis) through the year 2014:

          Registered Nurses: 703,000
          Post-secondary Teachers: 524,000
          Nursing Aides, Orderlies, Attendants: 325,000
          Management: 308,000
          Elementary School Teachers: 265,000
          Accountants: 264,000
          Computer Software Engineers: 222,000
          Computer Systems Analysts: 153,000

A number of factors are currently influencing the job market for health care workers, accountants, educator and information technology professionals. To learn more click here.

Fast Fact - Work for Moms Losing Appeal

In the span of the past decade, full-time work outside the home has lost some of its appeal to mothers. This trend, included in the latest Pew Social Trends report, holds both for mothers who have such jobs and those who don't. Will this trend---if it holds or expands---have a significant impact the staffing industry?

Just 21% of working mothers and 16% of at-home mothers now say working full-time would be their ideal situation. To review the full report, go to: http://pewresearch.org/pubs/536/working-women.

Frequently Asked Questions - Education Credit for Professional Reading

Each edition of The NAPS Credential will answer one or two questions being asked by current and prospective CPCs and CTSs as they interface with the NAPS national office.

Question: I do a good bit of professional and personal development reading. Can this be counted toward my continuing education requirements?

Answer: Reading for professional and personal development is one of the vehicles a CPC and CTS can use to meet the continuing education requirements for maintaining their certificate. Assuming the average book would take approximately 5 hours to read from cover to cover, that would translate to 5 contact hours or .5 CEUs (Continuing Education Units).

If one were to pursue this reading course of action exclusively over their entire three years, they would have to read ten complete books. The best course of action is to blend books and tapes with professional conference and workshop participation with in-house training program attendance to generate the 50 contact hours or 5 CEUs.

Question: Does NAPS maintain a list of approved books for continuing education?

Answer: NAPS takes the position that you should elect to read the books that will be most useful to you in your role as a staffing professional. You can read books that will help you in your professional development (i.e., supervision, team-building, etc. subjects) or personal development (i.e., time management, technical writing, etc. subjects). The choice is yours, but if you have any questions, feel free to contact Frank Burtnett, NAPS Certification and Education consultant at fburtnett@recruitinglife.com.
