About The NAPS Credential

Volume 1, Number 1                                                                                                                                         July 2006

The National Association of Personnel Services has a long and accomplished history of education and certification which has no peer in the staffing industry. Since the association first became involved in its certification work in the 1960s, more than 12,000 staffing professionals have earned the Certified Personnel Consultant (CPC) and Certified Temporary Staffing-Specialist (CTS). The training materials developed by Bob Style and Paula Rubin have been acclaimed by industry practitioners, managers and owners as the finest employment law resources available. These resources have become standards.

How important is certification to you in 2006? The answers rests with the results of every survey conducted by NAPS about the business success of CPCs and CTSs. Certified staffing professionals earn more. Firms with certified professionals do more business. Today, more than any other time, your credential is a "business necessity."

The NAPS Credential is being created to assist CPCs and CTSs keep abreast of matters related to their ongoing education and the maintenance of their certificate. The term "credential" in the title of this newsletter was chosen to reflect the importance of certification in your dealings with both candidates and clients. Your credential is a symbol of your voluntary willingness to study, be examined and then practice your profession according to industry developed professional and ethical standards. Your credential---be it CPC or CTS or both---is a significant part of your professional identity.

Dr. Frank Burtnett, certification and education consultant to NAPS for the past twelve years, will serve as the editor of The NAPS Credential. During his tenure Frank has played an active role in preparation of the NAPS certification examinations, development of the continuing education dimension of certification maintenance and the newly instituted NAPS Certification Immersion Workshops. His work with NAPS and other certification and accreditation organizations have placed him in a unique position to understand the mechanics of professional credentialing and offer guidance to the NAPS leadership.

Take the time to read this first edition and those that follow in the succeeding months. Help us help you sustain the important credential you have earned!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for July

Each edition of The NAPS Credential will answer one or two questions being asked by CPCs and CTSs as they interface with leaders and the national office. Readers are encouraged to submit personal questions for consideration.

Question: What kinds of educational activities must I experience in order to meet NAPS certification maintenance requirements?

Answer: NAPS has taken the position that your educational experiences should be personalized to meet your needs as an industry professional. Participation in professional conferences (NAPS, state or community sponsored) is one way, but don't dismiss in-house education and training activities as another. The relevance test is a simple one---does the education or training experience increase your professional knowledge or extend your professional skills? If the answer is "yes," it counts. Other ways you can meet the continuing education requirements can be found on the NAPS web site. Go to: http://www.recruitinglife.com/EduCert/contedrequirements.cfm

Question: I misplaced the continuing education log NAPS sent me when I became certified. How can I get another one?

Answer: The log can be found on and downloaded from the NAPS web site. Go to: http://www.recruitinglife.com//download/ceulog.pdf

Advocacy Matters - Your Certification is Your Credential

Webster defines credential as something that 'gives a basis for credit or confidence." Your NAPS certification is your professional badge---the longest standing symbol in the staffing industry of one's acquisition of knowledge regarding employment laws and commitment to standards and ethics.

Too often CPC and CTS holders equate certification to the satisfactory completion of the examination. In doing so, they sell their professional achievement short. NAPS certification represents what industry practitioners and leaders have determined should be the "body of knowledge" you needed to master to function effectively. Your study of employment laws prepared you for either the CPC or CTS exams (or both).

As a condition of your certification, you have agreed to abide by the NAPS professional and ethical standards and maintain your certification through personally relevant continuing education. All of this adds up to much more than simply passing a test. You have achieved a credential that gives a "basis for credit and confidence" to the candidates and clients you serve. Wear your credential proudly.
