Volume 4, Number 5
September/October 2009

When unemployment reached 9.7 percent in America in August and the possibility still existed that 10
percent could be reached, it became apparent that the “sting” of this recession and economic downturn
was harsher than any in recent memory. A sense of the raw emotions of those experiencing unemployment
was made vivid with the early September release of “The Anguish of Unemployment,” a report from the
John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
The study of 1,200 unemployed U.S. workers reveals the economic and personal costs associated with prolonged
joblessness, a subject of interest to the staffing professionals who are engaging these same people as they
seek to reestablish themselves in the workforce. The personal and family impact on the unemployed suggests
a mental health epidemic that could have “long-lasting effects on people’s ability to spend, invest, save
and take risks” Among the report findings:
• Three-quarters of the respondents report stress in their daily lives.
• Two-thirds reported being depressed.
• Three-fifths felt helpless
• Half stated they are angry
Matters get even worse. The study also revealed that significant numbers reported having trouble
sleeping, avoiding social situations, experienced strained family relations and increased their
dependency on alcohol and drugs.
Despite their circumstances, the unemployed survey respondents are still actively pursuing searches
for work and one-third believe they will be employed within four months. Also noteworthy among the
finding is that three-quarters say they would take a cut in pay to be working and a similar percentage
believed they will have to change careers to gain reemployment.

NAPS Certification Immersion Class Scheduling Dates for 2010
The NAPS Certification Immersion Classes (CIC) offers an alternative route---not a shortcut---to certification.
Each class guides certification-bound staffing professionals through the final throes of the study and testing process,
an experience that has resulted in 819 new Certified Placement Consultants (CPCs) and Certified Temporary
Staffing-Specialists (CTSs) since the program was inaugurated in 2005. That figure represents a 96.9% pass-rate
on the two certification exams.
Taught by Bob Style and Frank Burtnett, the CIC polishes off one’s personal study and takes them down the “home
stretch” to certification. Many CICs are held in conjunction with state association conferences or as separate
events with state association sponsorship. Others have been offered in conjunction with industry organizations and
firms. If you believe there sufficient interest or need (ideally 15-20 participants) in your organization, firm
or network to consider sponsorship of a Certification Immersion Class in your “neck of the woods,” contact John
Sacerdote at 860.243.0811 or jsacerdote@recruitinglife.com and get the ball rolling!
Get on the 2010 schedule today!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) ~ Tracking Continuing Education Credits
Each edition of The NAPS Credential will answer one or two questions being asked by current and
prospective CPCs, CTSs and CERSs as they interface with the NAPS national office.
Special Note: As certification and education consultant to NAPS, I’m asked very frequently for my
advice on how best to track continuing education credits for the purpose of certificate maintenance.
Posted below is a “rerun” of a previously asked question and answer.
Question: I find that I’m not doing a very good job of keeping track of my continuing education
experiences and fear that I won’t have the proper amount when NAPS asks for my records? Any thoughts
on how I might do a better job?
Answer: If you go to http://www.recruitinglife.com/download/ceulog.pdf you will find the NAPS continuing
education log in pdf form that you can download. Keep this long your desk or planner or give it to
a support staff member who can help you monitor your continuing education progress. On that log, list
all in-house training programs, conferences, seminars and the myriad other continuing education
activities NAPS will allow you to experience and receive credit. If you have a question about whether
something will count or how much time it is worth, send an email to describing the activity and time
you spent involved in it to Dr. Frank Burtnett at fburtnett@recruitinglife.com and he will provide
the answer.
